The author has analyzed literary sources and highlighted, general factors that take into account both the external impact and the internal attitude of the individual to the different events were identified. They are «educational process of the higher educational institution», «media», «friends» and «the public». To investigate the factors, the author has applied methods consisting of mutually complementary components: a survey and interviews with students; a survey and interviews with the curators of student groups; a survey and talks with teachers of the higher educational institution was chosen. The research allowed us to come to the conclusion that the factor «educational process of the higher educational institution», namely the classroom activity in social and humanitarian disciplines and the factor «family» influence the formation of the civil position of students to a greater extent, but all factors are interrelated and interdependent.
